Wandering Soul Scamper
Nataasan Beach Resort and Diving Center: Where your dream holiday comes true!

After the Tuburan quick escape, the next destination was still unknown. I made it to the point that I will go to where my feet leads me. But actually, there are few destinations at the back of my mind but not quite sure yet where to next. Last minute decision was to go to Sipalay, Negros Occidental. Originally, the prospected destinations were Cuatro Islas in Leyte, Campuestuhan or Mambukal Resort. But my itchy feet took me to Nataasan Beach Resort and Diving Center. A place where your dream holiday comes true!

Negros Occidental has remarkable and renowned tourist spots that anyone can enjoy. Ranging from the Ruins, Campuestuhan Mountain Resort, Mambukal Resort, and countless beaches. Originally, the first resort that came across my mind was the Perth Paradise Resort, due to its picture friendly infinity pool with the beautiful islets on the background. Those islets resemble those of that hundred islands but of course on a small scale.

Unfortunately, Perth Paradise Resort was fully booked at that time, they only have one room that would be available in few hours as the guests occupying it are about to check out after their island hopping activity. While waiting, we checked the place quickly and I could say that I was a bit disappointed. Maybe it’s just me, but the place is quite small, and not that beautiful compared to what I have seen in those pictures online. Expectation vs reality strikes again. Don’t get me wrong, but that’s my personal opinion. Others may say Perth is stunning and quiet excellent place to be. But for me, it’s just okay, the place has a scenic vista but not that impeccable, not even close.

Our trike driver suggested us to go directly to Nataasan Beach Resort but the stubborn me tried to check-out Perth Paradise Resort first. After checking out Perth, we went ahead to Nataasan Beach Resort and Diving Center. It is a bit far from Sipalay Town Proper. The trike ride took us around 30 mins going to the Resort. The place is not really crowded as a tourist would not really come that far unless they are up for a less crowded diving spot.

Nataasan Beach Resort and Diving Center is located in Punta Ballo, Brgy. IV, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental. The name “Nataasan” is an Ilonggo word which means the highest point in a particular place. The resort is located right on the hill overlooking the Punta Ballo white beach hence the name Nataasan was used.

The place is secluded that will really fit those who seek tranquillity, peace of mind and wanted to stay in a cozy and comfortable haven away from the crowded tourist spots. The resort is an amenity rich destination for all occasions whether it would be for family bonding, quick escape with your loved ones and or a fun-filled adventure.

Nataasan Beach Resort offers a wide array of activities for wandering souls, adventurous travelers and sloth tourists looking for a place to enjoy an excellent and high-class resort amenities with and illustrious local flair.

Listed below are few reasons why you should check out Nataasan Beach Resort and Diving Center on your next escapade.

1. Customer Service / Reception

The front desk or reception is at the other end of the resort. You will have to walk past the swimming pool area to reach the place. I even told our trike driver that it is not a front desk anymore since it is located at the back. LOL.

This way to the front desk please. 🙂

Kidding aside, it is really commendable that the staffs were very accommodating. They were really hospitable and friendly. They were more than willing to assist their guests in every way possible. You will feel like you are at home. They are also wacky type people and can throw jokes anytime to them and they would be very happy to talk to any of their guests. Just talk to them to break the ice. A little conversation won’t hurt.

2. White Sand Beach

It’s not often you get to see a sunrise-gold beach. That was our privilege as we gazed out at the slothful sea. Ebbing ever so gently, it looked at peace in its jade-green gown. It felt like we were walking on a carpet of candy floss, such was its softness. The golden sand swept around in a scythe of the beach, hemmed in by towering sand dunes. Far out to sea, rivers of pulsing light saturated the sea with gold. Only the occasional tourist walked past us. There was an absence of sun-blasted bodies in this Babylon of Nataasan beach resort.

Nataasan Beach Resort

Nataasan beach resort has its white sand beach lying right below the outcropping where the resort is. The sand is not that fine compared to other resorts but the serene ambiance of the beach is more than enough to distress and can even heal the excruciating pain of your heart.

3. Swimming Pool Amenities

The Resort offers a Swimming pool for adults and kids alike. The pool is slightly unique as it has a mini bar on its side. There are seats underwater beside the pool in front of the Bar. What’s good about Nataasan Beach Resort is that there are fewer visitors and the pool and other amenities are not overcrowded most of the time. To those who love night swimming, you can enjoy the pool as it can be used by the guests 24/7.

I always love having a quick dip at night before sleeping. So right after having few bottles of beer, I decide to have an hour chillax moment at the pool. It’s really nice to have the whole pool by yourself. Watching the stars and the moon while lying in the waters is really therapeutic, well at least for me. I find it to be very comforting and rejuvenating. It can make you ponder about life and think why you fall in love with someone who doesn’t even care? It made me wish na, “sana buwan nalang siya, para pwede ko siyang suntukin, suntok sa buwan to mga bes!” Just kidding. LOL

Nataasan Beach Resort

4. Sunset Patio of Nataasan Beach Resort

The resort has a place like a viewing deck to have a better view of the setting sun. The patio has benches and table that can be used as an activity area too. Or you can just have a cup of coffee and enjoy the view while waiting for the sun to set. The place is perfect to just sit back and relax and wait for the mark that another long day has ended that marks the new beginning. Life must go on and tomorrow is another adventure day!  So tara na! 🙂

5. Infinity Outdoor Dining

The horizon seemed to be stitched with a silver line. The seagulls were squawking over our heads and squabbling for morsels from the resort kitchen. As the sun had started to set, a funfair of barbecue aromas drifted towards us. The saline tang of the sea mingled with the cuisine, adding salt to its appeal. We decided to obey our rumbling stomachs, went back to the resort restaurant and ate. Nataasan Beach Resort: Infinity Dining

Plates of seafood and a bucket of tasty garlic chicken on a dimly-lit table watercress were our fare that evening near the pool area. It tasted tender and briny and the shell food sauce had a hint of a bouquet to it. What a wonderful evening under the lovely moonlight despite the storm. Infinity outdoor dining can cater events with a maximum of 130 guests.

6. Function Room / Videoke

Nataasan Beach Resort offers services for events too. They have a function room that can be rented for special events. We Filipinos are mostly music lovers, it can’t be denied that we had this so called singing sessions during special occasions. Nataasan Beach Resort offers a videoke machine for those who love to sing their hearts out loud. Their function room can accommodate 25-30 persons.

7. Bar and Restaurant

Nataasan Beach resort has its own Bar and Restaurant. It serves local cuisine, beverages, and alcoholic drinks. You can order your meal and savor it in the dining area overlooking the beach or enjoy the food in the garden at the activity area near the pool. Dining in the garden near the poolside under the moonlight is quite romantic to those who want to spend an intimate dinner with their love ones.

The restaurant and front desk will close at 10PM, so have your dinner taken before that time. If you want to have your drinks and chillax moments beyond 10PM, have it ordered beforehand. The staffs are very accommodating and considerate to their guests. In our case, we ordered our drinks at almost 10PM and the staff just told us that we can still use the dining area and just leave our bottles there when done.

8. Garden / Ocean View Accommodations

The resort offers a wide array of accommodation type. We chose the ocean view accommodation to have a scenic view of the calm seas and white sand beach of Punta Ballo right below the resort. Who would not want to wake up and have that majestic scene of the serene beach welcoming your very own eyes upon waking up from a long and tiring night? Well, that was like a piece of heaven to me. The mesmeric beauty of the beach was heart-swelling. Watching the sea waves zizzed, slapped, swished the stones and released it to the sands like its own master, kindling its own symphony is an extraordinary vista to watch.

9. Scuba Diving / Snorkeling

Nataasan Beach Resort offers scuba diving and snorkeling. But I heard from one of the guests, it has a bit steep price compared to the neighboring resort. For rates about this activities, you can contact the resort directly and make arrangements.

10. Boating / Island Hopping

Another activity that Nataasan Beach Resort can offer to its guests is the boating/Island hopping. We didn’t try this as we don’t have the luxury of time and besides the weather was not cooperative with us as there is a typhoon coming in when we stayed at this resort. For further information about this activities, contact the resort directly.

Tips:

  1. There are a lot of trike drivers who will offer to fetch you to any resort and diving spot. So finding a transport is not a problem in Sipalay. But make sure to have an agreement with the trike driver to fetch you back to the Market as transportation from the resort going back is quite a challenge.
  2. The rate is somewhat standard to all trike drivers. So expect to have 100-150 pesos fare one way per person. One trike is good for 3. I believed the fare is per trike (300-450) depending on which resort you would go.
  3. Be prepared for a bumpy ride ahead as the road to some resorts might be very rough like the one going to Perth Paradise.
  4. To maximize the places in your list, be mindful of the time spent in each spot as they can be far from each other. Taking travel time into consideration would be of great help in your fun-filled adventure.

Marmol Cliff, Lantawan Tunnel and Molobolo Spring quick sojourn

Marmol Cliff

It was through the invitation of a fellow travel blogger (Miss Bean formerly LaaganNgaBata) that I finally got the chance to visit Tuburan, Cebu over the weekend. We are going to visit Marmol Cliff, Lantawan Tunnel, Molobolo Spring, etc. I was supposed to go somewhere for a solo trip as my usual travel buddies have different appointments and prior commitments. But opportunities only knock once, so I immediately responded the invitation and grabbed the chance. I decided to move my solo trip for a day and visit Tuburan first before my solo weekend getaway.

The plan was to visit few of the spots in Tuburan like the Marmol Cliff, Lantawan Lookout and Molobolo Spring for just a day. Knowing that Tuburan is several kilometers away from the city, we need to take into consideration the very limited time to visit each spot taking into consideration the travel time from the city to Tuburan and versa.

Tuburan is located north of Cebu City and is the hometown of the late revolutionary Arcadio Maxilom. This sleepy town that comprises 54 barangays is less frequented by tourist and adventurer-seekers. Tuburan Cebu is known for several tourist spots waiting to be explored by the wandering souls and adventurers. Tuburan is known for its beaches, rivers, crystal-clear cold springs, caves and natural wonders that nature lovers and adventurer-seekers couldn’t resist.

Among the scenic spots in Tuburan are the Marmol Cliff and Cave, Lantawan Lookout and its springs and beaches. Tuburan has several springs, few of the popular ones are the Molobolo, Little Baguio and Mantawihan. Among its popular beaches are the Apalan, Daan Lungsod and many more.

Tuburan got its name from the prevalence of springs in the area. It was derived from the word “Tubod” which means spring. These springs are the sources of the households’ potable water among its early settlers.

How to get there:

By Hired Van:

You can ride a V-hire from Ayala Terminal going to Tuburan.

The fare is 140 pesos one-way. Alight at Tuburan Proper near the bus terminal. In our case, we took the hired van for convenience. Travel time would take around 3 hours. There are also hired van in North bus terminal plying to Tuburan with a bit lower fare (around 120 pesos).

By Bus:

Another option is to take the Bus going to Tuburan. Just got to North bus terminal and take the bus bound for Tuburan. I am not really sure of the fare as of this writing. I bet it is much lower than that of the Hired Van

Marmol Cliff: An ethereal gateway

The trip started with an early meet-up at Jollibee near Ayala Terminal. We had traveled for around 3 hours from Ayala Terminal to Tuburan. From Tuburan proper, it would take around 30-45 minutes motorcycle ride going to Marmol Cliff. The ride would be adrenaline pumping as you’re going to cross rivers by motorcycle. Yes, you will cross those rivers! Your hired motorcycle will suddenly become an amphibian monster.  It is quite a challenge to cross around 12 times or more on a very rocky riverbed.

Marmol Cliff is Tuburan’s famous gigantic twin marble rock that would make any adventurer have that pleasure of experiencing the beauty of nature. The boulders are beautiful and seem a majestic portal or gateway to some place ethereal. In between that twin marble rock is a turquoise stream wound its merry way through the opening. The waters sprung below the marble rocks in its way to the pebbles whisked in the riverbank and in the under wash like pieces of glitter. A ray of soft light impaled down from above piercing through those thick bushes glinting with little sparkles, like a thousand diamonds sanctified with an inner fire.

Marmol Cliff

There is a deep portion of the stream in between these twin cliff. If you want to go to the center and don’t want to get wet or swim your way in, you can ride the raft. There is no fixed amount each ride, you just have to give donations to the local operating the raft. In our case, we gave 10 pesos each. You can climb up on the boulders, unleash the child spirit in you and have fun! 🙂

On the other end of the cliff is just another normal river bank scene. What we have done was, took a lot of photos with the rocks as a backdrop.

Marmol Cliff

There is a cave opening in the side of the cliff but I did not bother to ask the locals as we were in the hurry for our next destination. After our trip, I found out that it is indeed a cave with spacious interiors that had been useful for Filipino Katipuneros during World War II. According to folklores, this wide cliff which stands over hundred feet high is also the spot where the Maria Cacao & Joaquin Tang-an Story lies.

Lantawan Tunnel: A safe hiding place

After our heart pumping motorcycle ride adventure from Marmol Cliff, we went straight to Lantawan Resort to visit the Lantawan Tunnel. Lantawan Tunnel is located in the vicinity of Lantawan Resort. Unfortunately, Lantawan resort is nearly not operational anymore. The place is of minimal to no maintenance at all. However, the place is still scenic. It has a vast ground area in front of the resort covered with mango trees with thick lush green grasses underneath.

Few meters from the back of the resort lies the Lantawan tunnel. When we visited the place, the ladders were wrecked already. So we have no way to go down but through the back door entry point with a small opening right below the small bridge along the shore.

Lantawan Resort is a private development in Panas, Daan Lungsod, Tuburan, Cebu. According to local folks, this tunnel was originally dug during the Japanese Occupation and is reportedly used as their hideout and jump down area from fighter planes during the World War II.

As opposed to the commonly used term “tunnel” by many, by technical definition, I would refer it as merely a pit or a hole. After taking few photos inside, we decide to capture more scenes right outside the hole. The child spirit within us was unleashed and we had so much fun doing crazy stuff and poses.

After few moments, we decided to eat lunch and proceeded to Molobolo Cold Spring after for a cold dip.

Molobolo Spring: Where fresh and salt water meets

Tuburan is blessed with several springs that serve as the source of potable water by the early settlers. Among its springs, Molobolo is the most frequented by both tourists and locals.

Molobolo Spring is said to be Tuburan’s major spring that has been used as the source of water for household purposes for a long time now. According to the local site, “the spring abundantly oozes out cold spring water (1 cu. m. /sec.) continuously spilling volumes of water through the beach fronting it. “

Molobolo has also been considered as a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike when speaking of Tuburan. The spring is accessible by any means of transportation. Thus expect the place to be crowded any time of the day especially during summer.

The spring is developed that it looks like a man-made swimming pool. It is located under the sheath and an eclectic binge of the tree branches covering the whole spring with shade. There are several food stalls beside the swimming area where you can buy snacks or meals if you’re not bringing any. There are open cottages near the spring for rent too. When you decide to go swimming in a not crowded pool, you can always go swimming on the beach fronting the spring.

If you are looking for a sophisticated, neat looking and not too crowded spring to take a relaxing dip, then I can say that Molobolo spring is not the right place for you. The place for me is just so-so, but it boils down to our own standards. What might be not too good for me might be the best for others? So if you’re purpose is to have that cold-dip, then maybe, just maybe Molobolo Spring is worth a try.

The weather on the late afternoon was not that good that we had to cut short our trip and go back to Cebu city early. It’s a good thing for me as I have another trip right after Tuburan which I will be posting separately soon.

There are few more places to visit in Tuburan like Tuburan Town Museum, San Antonio De Padua Parish Church, Adela River, Sto. Niño and Apalan Marine Sanctuaries, and Dao Tree (Dracontomelon dao). Dao tree was originally part of our itinerary but we chose to skip due to time constraints.

Have you been to Tuburan? Have you visited the place mentioned above? Do you have other beautiful spots in Tuburan that is worth to be included in the list? Let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment below.

Tips:

  1. There are a lot of motorcycle taxi drivers (habal2x drivers) who will offer to fetch you to Marmol cliff. Be vigilant as some of them might overprice the fare. Ask the locals where you can find the place where habal2x drivers bound to Marmol Cliff are situated.
  2. For security purposes, you need to hire a motorcycle taxi (habal2x) driver that is quite familiar with the place. It is really a challenge crossing a river for about 12 times with a rocky riverbed.
  3. Be prepared to get wet when crossing those rivers going to Marmol cliff. I personally recommend wearing sandals as your feet will surely get wet.
  4. To maximize the places in your list, be mindful of the time spent in each spot. Depending on where you start, the spots can be far from each other.

Bantayan Island - Where Serenity Overflows

Sometimes, we often overlook what is right in front of us because we badly need and set an eye to the presumed prestige and famous by many. We usually pay much attention on getting the thing that we don’t have yet well in fact what we are looking for is just right below our nose. We often forget to appreciate what is in front of us, instead we always appreciate what is beyond our own fences. Well, that’s who we are most of the time.

This is also true in every aspect of our being. Tourists spots for example. With the many beautiful beaches in the Philippines, people will always have to compare each one from the other. With a myriad of selections for white beaches among the 7,107 islands in the Philippines there are a handful that made it to the top list and became popular not only in the country but to international tourists as well.

But is our judgement not based on the popularity of the place? Sometimes, we tend to go to the most frequented place and deemed famous rather than on a place with the same of much better but is less popular. Social prestige at its finest right? Well anyway, tourist will be tourist and travelers and explorers will be explorers and travelers.

Like for example, Boracay Island is really making its way to the leader board for quite some time now. This place has the most number of tourists in a year, the beach lovers, adventurers and the like flock to this little paradise as they called it. But little did we know that there are a lot of other places that could be at par with the grandeur beauty of Boracay if given the right publicity and medium. Well, Boracay is still Boracay no one can beat its popularity as one of the top tourist destination in the whole Philippines but it’s getting more and more populated every day.

To those who don’t want a populous beach, a place in Palawan, Bohol or Bantayan Island in Cebu can be a good alternative. Bantayan Island is usually underrated for some in terms of its beaches and other activities but for a serene-loving adventurers and beach lovers, the place is a solitude and a safe haven full of serenity and tranquillity.

So what is in Bantayan Island that could make every peace and quiet loving beach bums drool for? Well, there’s not much isn’t it? Actually there are a lot of things to do in Bantayan Island but I will just focus about the beach this time.

Bantayan Island is an island located west at northern part of Cebu. It has 3 municipalities with roughly more than a hundred thousand recorded population. The island is mostly covered with coconuts and surrounded by beautiful white sand beaches.

Getting to Bantayan Island

If you are from Cebu City, the best way is to go to the North Bus Terminal and get on the bus going for Hagnaya. Bus Fare is around 150-ish for air-con and P130++ for deluxe/economy.  From Hagnaya wharf, ride a ferry going to Santa Fe. Ferry ticket is P170.00 and Terminal fee is P10.00. The trip from Hagnaya wharf to Sta Fe will take around 90 minutes.

Enjoying Bantayan Island

Upon approaching the shoreline of Bantayan in Sta Fe, the white sand beach along the horizon will reveal before your very eyes. You can see the jewel blue waters that is too inviting as the waves are rippling gently towards the shore. The tufty clouds is like cotton that drifted past the horizon like curtain of silk in the blue emerald skies. The air was pregnant with the smell of salt. Those things signifies that serenity is waiting. Upon reaching the wharf, you can take the jeepney or charter a trike to your chosen destination.

The white fine sands of Bantayan Island

Bantayan Island - Where Serenity Overflows

Among the beautiful beaches in Bantayan, I personally find Sugar beach and the sand bar of Kota beach excellent. But generally the beaches in Bantayan Island has almost the same characteristics. The sea is like a rippling blue blankets from the stretched surface of the sea far from the shore.  The water is so clean, where you can’t resist but stay under those clear waters as the opera of the sea gently washes over your body. It is like soft hands gently massaging every inch of you, soothing and getting rid of the hurly-burly and stresses of life.

Bantayan Island - Where Serenity Overflows

The sand bar is a nice place to walk into. It feels like you’re walking in the horseshoe of the beach. From the sand bar you could notice that the sea looks dozy as it rested in the afternoon glow. We could not help it but have that series of activities in circles until the setting of the sun. The gang decided to have another doze of the beach after dinner. We have then that usual funny yet intimate talks while soaking the refreshing waters under the starry skies. Singing in the beach with that guitar and a bonfire is just a wonderful experience. Amazing right? Arrggghh, this made me want to go back there right now.

Bantayan Island - Where Serenity Overflows

Another beach that is worth a visit nearby Kota Beach is the Sugar Beach. It has a really wide shoreline with white fine sands under the coconut trees.  Most tourists will visit sugar beach because of this feature. Some tourists will just setup tents in the beach front while others prefer to have a cozy accommodation elsewhere.  The only notable downside for Sugar beach is their comfort rooms and showers. It really needs major improvement. Nevertheless Sugar Beach experience is still a blast.

The Food

Bantayan Island offers a lot of fresh sea foods. You can have a sumptuous meal with their affordable sea foods. Just buy some from their wet market with a very reasonable price. You can cook it yourself or let the resort staff cook it for you. It’s kind of ironic and funny because we ended paying more on the service charge for cooking our food than the actual price of the sea foods be bought. But we are okay with that, because we wanted to enjoy the beach and have to spend more time with the companions rather than spending time cooking our food. We came to this place to enjoy and relax not to cook food anyway. 😀

Biking at Bantayan Island

You can do beach hopping actually in Bantayan Island. Just rent a bike for a day and have that body start grinding those extra calories. Bike rental is common in the island. In our case, we had our bikes for a day at P150.00 each. It’s really nice to enjoy and go around the nearby places by bike as you can control your own pace when to stop and when to go without consulting your companions. As we stroll around the area and hop from one beach to another, we decided to bike along the high way and follow the road where it leads us. The road we traveled is kind of silent and only few motor vehicles are on the way. The glassy air from the beach carries a faintly perfume of the sea breeze.

Bantayan Island - Where Serenity Overflows

Suddenly, a misfortune happened. I got cramps and nearly got tripped on the gutter. I got disappointed at first because it means a delay in our bike-ventures. But my friends decided not to push through and went back in our place instead. We decided to have another set of activities instead and it turned out to be fun too. I guess the 90/10 principle is really working that time because we chose to ignore the 10% of misfortune and made the 90% even more meaningful and fun.

Majestic Sunrise at Bantayan Island

Is there anything quite as blissful as a stroll by the seashore? It’s like walking through an airy womb of sky and clouds. The sea is an emerald gown and the beach seems dipped in earth shining diamond. The briny air carried a different smell of that spicy garlic and buttered shrimps. My stomach is rumbling when I heard the sizzling sound of the squids being cooked in the kitchen.

However the moment when the horizon turned into a an ember-gold tint like the curtain welcoming the grand entrance of the bright golden rays of the smiling sun, a different feeling has taken over. The feeling of hunger gradually blurs and soon faded.

Bantayan Island - Where Serenity Overflows

Bantayan Island is really a good place for sun worshipers. The sunrise will keep ones pulsing heart to swell with joy as the waves gently cascades onto the shore like an ancient alchemy of purr-and-pound. When the sun starts to rise and the rays starts to uncoil, it is like and old vellum parchment unrolling in front of your naked eye.  Your eyes will be drawn to this large and bright dot in the sky as it gets nearer and clearer.

Bantayan Island - Where Serenity Overflows

The view is really majestic that I myself just sit and ponder about my own mortality. Thinking about things over and over again. Until I asked myself this eternal and timeless question that all men of worth had asked throughout the ages: “What will I be eating for breakfast?” Guess my rumbling stomach is bringing me back to reality and asked me to have some for breakfast then.

Bantayan Island - Where Serenity Overflows

We wrapped up our Bantayan Island Chill moment with a sumptuous lunch and a last minute dip on the clear waters at Sugar Beach resort and went home before the setting of the sun. Before we left, I looked behind at the shore for the last time and already, my footprints were fading as if I had never been into this place… but the memories are imprinted in our minds already!

Bantayan Island - Where Serenity Overflows

It was really an awesome experience and I swore I would come back to this spellbinding place again someday for another fun activities and adventures. Would you go with me on my next visit in this serenity haven?

How about you? Have you been to Bantayan Island?  How was the experience? Is the place worth a re-visit? I would really love to hear your thoughts. Leave your comments below.

Lala-o Beach Siquijor
Siquijor Top Destinations

Siquijor Top DestinationsSiquijor is the smallest province in the Visayas region. It is dubbed as the island of fire or Isla del Fuego. Ancient folklore has tagged this place as full of sorcery, witchcraft, magic, love potions, voodoo dolls, etc. The stigma lives for centuries wherein it came to the point that when people knew someone who came from the province, they will evade that person and do not make any bad comments else you will know what will happen next. 😀

With all these tales flying around, it gives the turning point of the tourism industry of the province to either progress or gives reasons for the travelers and adventure seekers to hesitate in coming to this beautiful paradise.

No matter how scary the tales are, the natural and pristine beauty of this island has enthused the prying minds of people who have guts to drop all this nonsense and experience the magical opulence the Island of Fire has to offer.

I have been to Siquijor twice and based on what I have experienced and witnessed, the following are my Siquijor Top Destinations list.

1. Salagdoong Beach, Maria Siquijor

Salagdoong beach is one of Siquijor Top Destinations that every beachgoer and adventure lovers shouldn’t miss. The beach is in Olang, Maria, Siquijor Philippines which is approximately 30 kilometers away from Siquijor Port. This beach is located inside a government run resort but it is still open to the public.

The beach is very clean and well maintained that made it ideal for swimming. Salagdoong Beach is famous for its cliff jumping and kayaking activities. The most captivating feature of the beach is its emerald crystal clear waters that will change its shade to Atlantis-blue as you go deeper.

2. Salagdoong Man-Made Forest, Maria Siquijor

Be mesmerized by the thick lush green yet primitive forest as you enter the road going to Salagdoong Beach. The tree branches are like knotted arms that rose ever upwards like hoary fortresses that stood proudly screeching high up forming canopies or an arch of fairytale-green above your heads for you to pass by like royals marching under the arching pavements in the helm of their kingdom.

The orchestra of the bird songs can be heard the further you go to this mystical and spellbinding foliage.

3. San Isidro Labrador Church and Convent, Lazi, Siquijor

The San Isidro Labrador Parish Church of Iglesia Parroquial de San Isidro Labrador, commonly known as Lazi Church, is a Roman Catholic church in the municipality of Lazi, Siquijor, Philippines. Lazi Church is the oldest among churches in Siquijor Island.

The U-shaped bahay na bato convent is one of the largest convents built during the Spanish colonial era.  The first floor is stonewalled while wood panels can be found on the second floor. Partitions of the convent were removed but the original structure was maintained. It is said that the convent houses the Siquijor Heritage Museum which has the collections of important church relics and paraphernalia. Currently, the Convent is under repair.

Be amazed by the century old Balite tree with a fish spa at its roots. The tree is said to be 400 years old or more. The Balite tree or banyan has those creepy vines reaching all the way down to its base.

Balite Tree Siquijor

What made this Balite tree unique to others is the cold spring at its roots which the locals had made it an instant foot spa by putting small fishes in the pooled water from the spring. The water on its roots may be one of the factors that explain about its longevity.

Lala-o Beach Siquijor

Underneath them, is the opera of the sea waves like a rippling blanket washing over the fine sand and with the wave music as a great welcome. It was soothing and I was glad to get away from the hurly-burly and stresses of life.

However,  to savor the sea’s indefinable beauty we should let its vastness seep into our minds. With pulsing heart, we will carry fragments of it home as a memory.

Sunset viewing along Lala-o beach is astonishingly breathtaking. Anywhere near San Juan is a very good place to watch the spectacular sunset. The night is here and the sky looks like a black, velvet ceiling sprinkled with dream dust – stars. As you sit and ponder your own mortality, you will then ask yourself with the timeless question of all mankind, ” what are you going to eat for dinner?” 🙂

Cambugahay Falls Siquijor: The Enchanting Waterfalls

Cambugahay Falls

Cambugahay Falls is one of the attractions in Siquijor Island. The falls is located approximately 2km north of the town of Lazi, along with the Siquijor Circumferential Road.

Cambugahay Falls is like an enchanted waterfall due to its features. It consists of a multi-tiered waterfall with clean waters coming from natural springs and watersheds from the forest. These waters run-off and snake through about few kilometers downstream forming beautiful lagoons and rapids.

Cambugahay Falls is one of the many precious waterfalls in the island with an enthralling scenery and serene atmosphere. Tourists usually flock to this waterfall when visiting Siquijor due to its magnificent tiers and crisp and clean waters. Even the locals still enjoy spending their time in this mystical attraction.

Cambugahay Falls

Among other destinations in Siquijor, Cambugahay Falls is one of my favorites. After we arrived at the place and went down via the 135 steps stairway, we gasped in astonishment at how magnificent the waterfall is. The first tier that you could see has the Rope for Tarzan Swing wherein you can try it for free. This tier is where most tourists go swimming and will become a bit crowded on weekends.

Cambugahay Falls does not have a significant and spectacular drop compared to other falls that I’ve been to but it is wide enough which gives a different charm like a spell cast on you from a lovely witch and immediately get hooked with it.

Cambugahay Falls

The water from the waterfall is powder blue and magical. It was rustling over the rocks joyfully, spilling over the ledge down into the pool like a gigantic waterspout. Despite the waters are not that crystal clear but nevertheless it is very soothing.

The second tier of Cambugahay Falls is a bit small, but still, the waters still flow smoothly as syrup into the pool and foamed at the bottom.

The topmost tier of Cambugahay Falls is also magnificent. We gasped in astonishment at the clarity of the Atlantis-blue waterfall. The waters are spurting over the basalt rock. There is a whizzing vortex at the bottom where run-off water tingled the rocks as it seeped away. Also, there appeared to be a cave under the arch of waterfalls.

Cambugahay Falls

The water is so enticing to have a quick dip, but we’re not going to stay a bit longer so I opted to take pictures most of the time. It is hard to resist also not to take notice on the enchanted grandeur by the bank as the scene was picture perfect.

Cambugahay Falls

How about you? Would you take a quick dip on these waterfalls? Or just indulge yourself with the scenic view and take photos instead? Let’s talk about your Cambugahay Falls experience by leaving a comment below.

6 Reasons why Mount Naupa is for beginners

Mount Naupa, Mt Naupa

It has been my 3rd time climbing Mount Naupa in the city of Naga Cebu. My first time was a night trek with two of my good friends Analyn and Eddu. The second time was with the club where I am the President. It was my first month of my leadership bringing around 40 trekkers with me last January this year.

This time, we planned to just have a camp out in Mount Naupa as our year-end climb for the club. That is because the month of December would be an outreach program and the club might just choose a venue that doesn’t involve trekking at all.

Last November 19-20, around 40 campers visited the Mount Naupa again, almost the same number as last January. The trek was divided into two, afternoon trekkers and night trekkers. For the afternoon trekkers, there were just nine of us including WanderingFeetPH. Four of us were campers and the five went home past 6PM.

While waiting, we had these crazy moments within the group. To read more about our experiences, you may read on WanderingfeetPH’s and foureyedlaagan’s stories.

Mount Naupa

To have a sneak peak of the happenings on our camp out, watch this video from foureyedlaagan.

Mount Naupa is one of the known destinations to trekkers nowadays. Mt Naupa stands at 584 MASL that is located at Barangay Cogon, City of Naga, Cebu. Mount Naupa is situated south approximately 22 Kilometers away from Cebu City next to Minglanilla.

Mount Naupa is famous for its almost perfect cone-shaped peak with the picturesque green meadow panoramic scene. Everyone couldn’t want more but to experience the serene beauty of the place surrounding it with the 360 view at its peak. If you’re lucky, you can witness a sea of clouds early on the morning.

So why is Mount Naupa a perfect mountain for beginners that would like to start or try trekking activity?

Wandering soul scamper listed his personal reasons why Mount Naupa can be one of the best mountains to try for the aspiring trekkers who wanted to have a taste what mountain trekking and camping.

  1. Mount Naupa is Accessible

Mount Naupa is very accessible. It is accessible via Tungkop Minglanilla or in Lanas, Naga. Though the trek time via Lanas can take more than an hour compared to the other entry point. When going to Mount Naupa via Tungkop, Minglanilla, youcan hire a motorcycle taxi (habal2x) to haul you to the jump off at Sto. Niño Chapel at Barangay Cogon, Naga. There is a number of motorcycle taxi’s so transportation is not a problem unless you are going with a large group.

  1. Trail difficulty is relatively too easy

Trail difficulty is relative. Difficulty should not be defined per mountain as each of them is different from each other but for baselining and benchmarking purposes, few may rate the difficulty level of the trail to have a relative comparison and sort of heads up what to expect ahead.

Mount Naupa has relatively an easy trail. It has a trail difficulty of 1/9. Meaning it is one among mountains with the easiest trails. Its trail class is just class 1-2, meaning it is just an established path and no rocky parts and less or no obstacles at all. It sounds too easy right? It’s just like a walk in the park though. 🙂

  1. Trekking time is less than an hour

Since Mount Naupa has a trail difficulty level of just 1/9, trekking requires less time. It is for the reason that trekking time is one factor in determining the difficulty level of the trail. I won’t expound further how to rate trail difficulties in this post, yet. Mount Naupa Trek time is just 30 minutes to one hour. For some seasoned trekkers, this trail can be an easy one for trail running.

  1. Mount Naupa has relatively large camp site

Mount Naupa has a vast space for camp site. It can really accommodate roughly about a hundred tents. For beginners, no need to fret for not having the equipment for camping comfort as the ground is mostly flat and covered with grasses. Technically, pitching a tent is a no sweat as the ground is not rocky so fixing the pegs is as easy as 1,2,3.

Wandering Soul Scamper does not recommend setting up camp at the peak of Mount Naupa, even id no one prohibits it. This is to give way to other campers a chance to enjoy the picturesque view at the top without the cluttered view of the tents.

  1. Mount Naupa is good for day treks

It’s a common reason for beginners that they don’t have that durable shelter (tent) that is why they won’t try camping yet after the trek. Mount Naupa is the solution because you can have your day trek in this mountain! Although there are few mountains within the city that anyone can have day treks too like Mt Kan-irag in Sirao and Mount Babag, but considering the trail difficulty for those mountains, it would not be a wise decision to have those mountains be their first mountain to trek.

Since the trekking hours to climb Mount Naupa is just around 30 minutes to one hour, then anyone can just do day trekking. There are some who will be going there at early dawn just to catch the sunrise.

  1. Temperature in Mount Naupa is just so-so

Since Mount Naupa is not that high in terms of altitude or elevation, it has a fairly so-so weather and temperature. It can be a bit colder at night but it’s really bearable even without those thick jackets and sleeping bags. Sometimes during summer, the temperature can be really hot and humid too, just like the weather in the city. Beginners need not worry about the extremes in terms of weather when trekking or camping at Mount Naupa.

So there, these are the list that made Mount Naupa a conducive mountain for first timers on trekking. One thing to look after too as a bonus on camping at Mount Naupa is the sea of clouds during early mornings – that is if you are lucky enough that the clouds would cooperate. 🙂

Do you have a specific mountain in your mind that could be a good one for beginners? Of if you’re not a beginner, where did you start your trekking? How was the experience? Share your thoughts in the comment box below.

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden: Busay’s Romantic Hideaway

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden

Busay has been known for tourist spots like Mountain View Nature’s Park, Temple of Leah, Chateu de Busay, Tops Skyline Garden, Rancho Cancio, Serenity Farm, etc. Being one of the frequented place in the highlands of Cebu, Busay has a lot to offer aside from the mentioned already. City view is really stunning at night at Tops Skyline Garden and a special dinner date with family, friends or loved ones can be possible at Lantaw Restaurant near Mountain View Nature’s Park.

With that said, who would have thought that all these days, there is a botanical garden that lies hidden on the sloping hills of Busay? It is the Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden that is located in Barangay Malubog, Busay, Cebu. Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden boasted its beautiful terraces of flowers of different species consisting of around more than a hundred of Cebu’s own local flower varieties.

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden is located along Trans Central Highway in Barangay Malubog, Busay. It is just few meters away from La Tegola, Busay and the entrance is just right across Malubog Integrated School. From Cebu City, it will be at your left and of course at your right when coming from Balamban.

This Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden is the first terraced botanical Garden in the Philippines, per se. The garden has just opened recently last October 1, 2016 and it caught our attention prompting the 3 wanderers to pay a quick visit of the place over the weekend.

IMG_6141.JPG

Last weekend, the three wanderers foureyedlaagan, WanderingFeetPH and yours truly WanderingSoulScamper agreed to visit Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden. We went there by motorbikes at around 4PM in the afternoon.

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden

The three wanderers had no enough sleep from the previous night out. But that doesn’t stop us to pursue our plans. As we went up to the Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden and headed to the coffee shop to pay for the entrance fee, we felt a bit groggy and sleepy still so we ordered coffee. We had our gadgets out, as we took pictures on our way up. We had some short of chit chats with the attendants in the coffee shop. Upon finishing my orders, unknowingly Miss Joy had been listening to us attentively as we made jokes to the cashier and the barista and she eventually started a conversation.

She was asking me from where we learned about Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden. I just smiled and say, we learned it from our fellow blogger who just recently visited the place and then I told her that we might be blogging about the place too. She is very friendly and thankful and asked where she could check our blogs. We had a short talk and then I joined the two wanderers who had been taking pictures of the place already.

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden

Few minutes after and the rain had poured, we immediately took shelter in the coffee shop. It was timely that the barista just paged us that our orders were ready. Yes, they had speakers put up all over the place and played relaxing music. Just few moments after our boisterous laughter and few crazy video episodes, Miss Joy joined us where we had a chance to asked few facts about the place.

History of Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden:

According to Miss Joy, the Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden is designed to showcase local flowers. The flowers are meticulously arranged on a mountain slope to form terraces. She said that it took about 7 years of hard work. The whole idea was conceptualized by a father who happens to be a co-owner of El Salvador Resort in Danao, City.

The owner wanted his 2-hectare parcel of land in Malubog, Cebu City to be developed into a flower garden where he and his three children could bond. Wow! A sweet father indeed! For the owner, the creation of the garden is one way of expressing his love to his children. The Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden was not completely developed yet as of this writing. I am honored that Miss Joy told us few more insights about the future plans of the garden. In addition, she even told us to wait a little longer to wait for the owner and maybe meet the owner in person but we need to go back to the city as it was getting late already.

Mount Labalasan (Osmeña Peak): Cebu’s Highest Point

Osmeña Peak

After our Mount Takliad trek and camping, we continued our jaunt for another fun-filled camp to Cebu’s highest mountain – the Mount Labalasan or commonly known as Osmeña Peak. It was my nth time visit to Osmeña Peak. Despite of the fact that I visited Osmeña Peak multiple times already, I would never grow tired or lost my interest to go back in this wonderful place. Because in trekking, I really do believe that no matter how many times you have been into the same mountain, you will never get to have the same experience and will never trek the same trail twice. The trail will always change and the experience will always be unique.

Osmeña Peak
Wandering Soul Scamper @ Osmeña Peak

I would be like a broken record if I will keep on describing Osmeña Peak every time I write about it after my trek. So I won’t. Instead I will just jump directly what happened during this journey. But you may want to read my previous experience during my first visit to Osmeña Peak here.

Osmeña Peak
View of the camp site from Osmeña Peak

The trip was a continuation to our Argao Multi-peak trekking plan that focuses on Mount Takliad and Mount Lantoy. Part of being a traveler is being able to adapt easily to changes on the plans due to uncontrollable influences like hostile weather conditions and the likes. Our Multi-Peak and caving adventure plans were cut short so we decided to proceed for another adventure – Trek to Osmeña Peak and traverse to Kawasan Falls to satisfy our adventure hungry and wandering souls. We were eight in the group and half of us decided to proceed and half of the group went home right after Mount Takliad Trek.

IMG_4250.JPG
The Squad

The four of us hired a tricycle from Argao to Dalaguete since the two towns were just few kilometers apart and we hired motorcycle taxis from Poblacion Dalaguete to Mantalongon Public Market. We had our lunch at the public market and started our trek right after. We chose to trek from Mantalongon Public Market to the foot of Osmeña Peak as it was more enjoyable and had more fun on the trek while conversing with each other rather than just riding a motorbike throughout. It took us about an hour trek with minimal stops in between.

Osmeña Peak
F4 @ Osmeña Peak?

The weather was excellent. The afternoon sun was not that fierce and the skies had some clouds giving us protection while we followed the open trail going to Osmeña Peak. We can’t even feel the exhaustion of the trek as we were constantly conversing and making the most out of it with some funny and diverse topics and silly jokes.

After an hour, we arrived at the tourism office and paid 30 pesos each as entrance fee. They will also collect 50 pesos camping fee per tent for the overnight campers, but will do the collection in the morning as Osmeña Peak sometimes will be subjected to strong and growling winds that in some cases, few of the camper’s tent won’t even survive the night. If such unfortunate circumstances do happen then no fees will be collected for the camping fee.

Osmeña Peak
Tourism Office

We chose a strategic location for our camp and settled a bit after pitching our tents before enjoying the beauty of Osmeña Peak. The weather was perfect, no fog and has a very stunning sea of clouds formation on the background when the sun was about to set. The clouds added an ethereal hint to the majestic scene at the summit of Osmeña Peak! Picture perfect isn’t it? We took several photos and went back to our camp after the setting of the sun!

Osmeña Peak

We had our dinner as early as 6pm. We had nothing to do again but to talk with each other. Everyone seemed even more comfortable that we had this silly game to make stories and translate it from English to tagalog, Bisaya and Ilonggo. Everyone had taken turns throughout the game. Few hours later we called it a night. Good night Bes!

Osmeña Peak has been known for its strong wind gusts at nighttime. We had few gruesome experiences before wherein our tents were almost damaged by the strong howling winds especially when the weather was too aggressive. We had this funny experience in one of our camp outs wherein other group of campers asked us if we saw their tent passed by! He meant if we saw their tent flown away by the strong winds.  (“Mga migo, kita mo ug tent ni agi?”). But this time, we were too fortunate that the weather was so friendly that we only experienced a little drizzle and a mild wind gusts throughout the night. Thus, everyone had a very good night sleep.

There is nothing more fulfilling than the feeling of waking up at the right side of the bed right? The feeling of waking up in an open field with the cool breeze is really invigorating.

We’re awake, had our quick breakfast and broke camp to start our traverse to Kawasan Falls early. We were excited to reach Kawasan Falls for a dip as we had no shower for 3 days already. LOL. The traverse from Osmeña Peak to Kawasan Falls was a fun-filled journey. It was full of conversation with diverse and funny topics again that spiced up the mood of everyone. At some point, we found ourselves singing random songs along the trail and doing silly stuffs and silly poses in front of the camera. LOL.

After 4 hours of trekking, we arrived at Kawasan Falls and had the ever wanted dip on its ice cold waters that made our strained muscles alive once more.

Here are few Need-To-Know information about Osmeña Peak that most travelers and tourists alike may not know at all or had a totally different info all along.

  • Osmeña Peak stands at an approximate elevation of 1,013 meters above sea level (MASL).
  • It is the highest peak in Cebu island that was formerly known as Mount Labalasan and later on was commonly known as Osmeña Peak.
  • It is located within the boundaries of Patung, Badian and Mantalongon, Dalaguete and is part of Patung, Badian mountain range. Osmeña Peak is said to be part of Patung, Badian and not from Mantalongon, Dalaguete as most mountaineers, tourists and travelers had assumed for a while now. I stand corrected as I was one of those who thought that Osmeña Peak is part of Mantalongon, Dalaguete.

Look who just jump!

How about you? Have you been to Osmeña Peak? Don’t miss out your opportunity to visit and enjoy the stunning beauty that Osmeña Peak could offer you for free! Well the view is free but you have to pay the entrance fee! 😂

How to get there?

From Cebu South Bus Terminal:

  • From Cebu South Bus Terminal, ride a bus bound to Dalaguete or any bus that would pass Dalaguete
  • Alight at the Town Proper (Poblacion). Just tell the bus conductor to drop you off at the junction going to Mantalongon Market (Osmeña Peak).
  • Hire a motorcycle taxi (habal-habal) going to Mantalongon Market
  • Register at Tourism Office.

From Osaka Terminal inside Caltex Gasoline Station (Near Carbon Market)

  • Ride a minibus here bound to Mantolongon Market.
  • Alight at Mantalongon Market.
  • Hire a motorcycle taxi (habal-habal) going to the foot of Osmeña Peak.
  • Register at Tourism Office.

Few Tips:

  • Wear proper trekking attire for comfort even though the trail is established.
  • Parts of the trail have loose soil that can be slippery especially on rainy season.
  • There is a vast area for camping, but on peak seasons it can be overcrowded so if you’re planning to camp overnight, target to arrive early on the campsite.
  • Bring durable tents as Osmeña peak is notorious for having brutal gusting winds at night especially on hostile weather conditions.
  • Preserve the cleanliness of the place by observing the leave no trace principle. Whatever you bring in, pack it out. Do not throw garbage anywhere or leave anything behind rather pack it out and dispose it properly.

How to get there?

From Cebu South Bus Terminal:

  • From Cebu South Bus Terminal, ride a bus bound to Dalaguete or any bus that would pass Dalaguete

Trail Tweaks: How to Trek Like a Pro?
IMG_4380.JPG
@Mount Lanaya, Alegria,Cebu

I love the outdoors. I love trekking and traveling to places. The fresh air, the rejuvenating feeling, the great workout and the amazing sights that goes with it. I love to go outdoors to have a good balance between the corporate and personal life. Adventure travels which includes communing with nature is definitely a must for me once in a while. Such activities like trekking, caving, chasing waterfalls or simply visiting a resort or an Eco-tourism site will do the trick. The fulfillment of spending time trekking with the great outdoors is unfathomable.

I am not a pro hiker/trekker, but I’ve learned a couple of things along the way and I’m happy to share it with you. As a hiker, there’s a lot to think about when you’re are going to hit the trail. The thought of what to put in the backpack or how to avoid the woes that might be encountered along the journey. But despite all the odds, if you have the adrenaline junkie spirit in you, nothing’s going to stop you from doing so. You will do it against all odds.

So if you’ve been very hesitant because you don’t consider yourself an outdoorsy type or a hiker / trekker or you’ve never tried it yet, don’t fret coz there aren’t many rules to follow. These tips might be of help to get you started and trek like a pro in no time.

How to trek like a pro?

  1. Get the most out of it

IMG_4268.JPG
Lumpan Campsite

Hiking has many benefits and like walking it is a pretty simple activity. But despite it being simple, it requires preparation too. We need to prepare to have an enjoyable, safe and comfortable hike else we end up having a cumbersome experience. The golden rule here to make the most out of our trekking experience is to “trek comfortably and safely”. After all, we do these activities for enjoyment.

IMG_9452.jpg

  1. Dress appropriately

IMG_3682.JPGFor starters, never hike wearing flip-flops. It’s ridiculous! So, how to trek like a pro? You can, by dressing smart. Ask for help with your trekking friends for the right outfit. Here’s few tips about outfit.

Starting with the feet, you need a professional gear as a hiker even though you’re just starting out. If the trail is mild and no treacherous terrain, a good sneaker shoes should be okay or you can wear shoes resembling those of the running shoes but have extra traction. However, for any serious trails, rocky trails and long distance treks, a real hiking boots or shoes is really needed or you’ll want a boot with hefty soles that will protect your feet from “stone bruises” as these shoes provide enough support and stability to keep you from twisting an ankle.

Of course you can trek with anything you want, like with jeans or shorts, a T-shirt and a pair of slippers or athletic shoes. Basically it’s possible but we’re talking about how to trek like a pro here.

Trek Like a ProAs for the clothing, wear layers. This way you’ll be prepared for a range of temperatures in the mountains. Your clothing should be comfortable, temperature-appropriate and provide you with protection from sunburn, bugs and poisonous vegetation. Clothing made from quick-drying technical fabrics will be more comfortable. Sample layers would be: a shirt made of a lightweight synthetic or quick-drying (dri-fit) fabric as an inner layer, mid-layer is a warm top fleece, and an outer layer of a lightweight rain shell.

  1. Carry enough water

IMG_8860.JPGIt is a common mistake for beginners to set out on a trek without enough water. You need water, no question with that. But how much of it are you willing to carry? Yes, water is heavy. So when hitting the trail keep in mind that a little extra weight due to extra water doesn’t hurt compared to the lack of it. Anyway, those extra weight will gradually gets lighter as you trekked, theres Plan to carry at least one liter of liquid per person for every 2 hours of hiking.

Never drink directly from the streams even if it looks pristine. It will likely a breeding place for other organisms or filled will bacteria that can make you very sick. Prevention is better than cure after all.

  1. Don’t leave your research to Siri

IMG_3873.JPGYour phone might not work in some remote areas so don’t rely on it all the time. Do your research beforehand, there are a lot of references that you can refer to. Do yourself a favor by having a well research information about your destination, what to expect, the weather conditions, secure maps, etc or a guidebook. And oh! don’t forget to tell at least one of your good friends when will you be going home. In that way, at least there is someone who will be checking on your whereabouts when you fail to return on the said date. Just a safety precaution but if you don’t feel like doing it, that’s totally fine.

  1. Pace yourself

Trek Like a ProPacing is a crucial thing in trekking. If you’re hiking with a group, let the least fit or the slowest person set the pace even if it’s a child. It is not a race in the first place. Remember, you don’t just have to reach the panorama the trail leads to but you also have to get back. Most importantly, converse while you trek. It does not only signify that you are having the right pacing but it could help lessen the feeling of tiredness.

Try trekking without any talking and try to have a similar one with all the usual conversation with occasional jokes and laughter while you converse and see the difference on your exhaustion level.

  1. Always check the weather

IMG_8041.JPGIt sounds like a no-brainier but weather plays an important role most of the time especially when trekking. The weather can be much more severe as you gain altitude or elevation. This can affect the itinerary and the course of action that needs to be taken when certain weather related circumstances will be encountered along the way. When in the midst of adventure with a really bad weather, don’t be afraid to call the shot to withdraw. Trust your instinct. If it doesn’t feel and sound good, then it must not be good.

  1. Practice good trail etiquette

IMG_1996.JPGThis is the common mistake for some. It seems that they owned the trail and will never give way to locals even if they were hauling heavy products. When we hit the trail let us be more considerate to our fellow mountaineers especially to the locals. When someone approaches may it be a local or not, we should step aside and let them pass. If you’re in the large group and a small group of hikers or a solo hiker is approaching, step aside and let them pass.

Also, we must always abide by the “leave no trace” principles, which include respecting wildlife, staying on durable paths rather than tramping on vulnerable land and or vegetation, and the most obvious: putting garbage where it belongs, even if that means you have to carry it for kilometers for proper disposal.

  1. Have a hiking/trekking buddy

IMG_8110.JPGNo man is an island. Even the most seasoned mountaineer could not assure that he/she don’t need anybody on the trail. The trail can be treacherous at its worse especially on bad weather conditions. Although following through wild terrain might leave us introspective and thoughtful, it’s not something that we should do by ourselves. The journey itself can be dangerous for many reasons, so finding strength and safety in numbers is highly encouraged. So go out there and pair up with at least one good and dependable buddy.

These rules/tips might not be applicable to other adventures but this might be of help in some way. Once we’ve mastered these rules on how to trek like a pro, we might be hooked by the activity itself. We should always keep in mind and take into consideration our own safety and we should never take chances that might involve risks in person’s life. There are only a few activities that are both more enjoyable and beneficial to health and that includes hiking/trekking. Thus trekking/hiking is a skill you may want to master quickly, like a Pro!!!

I came up with this list based on my experiences and learning. If you find anything that may be relevant to add in the list, just let me know by leaving a comment below.

Mount Takliad: The Unseen Grandiose Mountain in Argao
Mount Takliad
At the foot of Mount Takliad

Argao as considered one of the best places in the Southeastern part of Cebu has a lot to offer aside from its rich heritage and culture. From the wide array of tourism offerings like caves, beaches, springs, waterfalls and the infamous Argao’s Torta and Bahalina, it has a lot more to offer to adrenaline junkies too.

For many, Argao has been underrated in terms of Tourist Attractions. But considering all the beauties of nature that Argao can offer is just mind blowing. It is in Argao that you can find a lot of interesting places like “mini rice terraces’ in Butong, Argao, and the Coal Mountain Resort which offers an all-in-one adventure place. To top it all, Argao has at least 4 mighty mountains that are less trodden by most mountaineers and mostly didn’t even heard of it yet. These mountains were Mount Lantoy, Mount Takliad, Mount Tiposo and Mount Binalabag. These mountains are registered attractions by Argao Tourism but there are also less known ones.

Travel is the only thing that we can buy that makes us richer. They say that we can’t buy happiness. Yes, it’s true but we can always buy plane tickets and it’s the next best thing, isn’t it? Actually the best gift we could give to ourselves is a lifetime of travel adventures as it brings power and love back to our lives. Yes, we travel to escape the daily routines and have a break from the chaotic city life but it doesn’t mean we’re escaping life. We should travel not to escape life but for life not to escape us. We should do it whenever we can, as the future is promised to no one. One thing I learned from traveling is that wherever I’ll go, I must go with all my heart.

Traveling will be more rewarding when shared with good friends and love ones. The memories that we will be creating along every journey will always be imprinted in our minds no matter what as travel is worthy of any cost or sacrifice. These will always stay in our hearts as time goes by. These things will make us even more richer, gain more wisdom and become a storyteller.

Answering to the wanderlust in us, we had an almost spontaneous escape from the city together with my good friends, fellow outdoor/travel bloggers foureyedlaagan, wanderingfeetPH and few guests. The plan was to explore Mount Lantoy and Mount Takliad with several side trips like waterfalls and caving but due to weather constraints, we modified the itinerary and just proceeded to Mount Takliad instead.

Mount Takliad is a mountain located in barangay Cansuje about 11 kilometres inland from municipality of Argao, Cebu Philippines. Despite being registered as a potential tourist attraction for mountaineers by the Tourism Office, Mount Takliad is one of the mountains that are less frequented by mountaineers. It stands at around 700 MASL (approximate reading based on mobile phone’s altimeter) with a ridge like feature. Mount Takliad peak has a stunning 360 degrees overlooking view of the neighboring mountains and one of those is the elusive and mystical Mount Lantoy. On the eastern part of the peak is a cliff, overlooking the Usmad River.

The Mount Takliad Experience:

The Jaunt to the Lost Trail:

Mount Takliad ArgaoMount Takliad

The jaunt started with a registration at Agao’s Tourism Office. The Tourism office was kind enough to provide our guides and open their office on a Saturday to assist us. The guides already contacted the motorcycle taxis that hauled us to the jump off at Barangay Conalum. The trip to Barangay Conalum was about 30-40-minute ride. At the barangay hall at Conalum, Argao there would be an onsite registration and a collection of 20 pesos per person.

No one in the group had been to Mount Takliad so we were basically entrusting ourselves to our guides. We don’t have an idea on what to expect and what kind of trail we are going to take. After our onsite registration, we headed to the jump off. The head guide gave us a short briefing about the trek, it’s pretty basic info but still they have to do it as it is a standard protocol.

The Trail:

We have really no idea what type of trail awaits us as we go trekking to the summit of Mount Takliad. We started our ascent from the jump off point in Conalum, Argao. There are residences along the foot path trail going up. Few more steps and the trail was kind of rocky and mossy signifying that the trail we’re taking was a less frequented one. As we went up a bit towards a thick vegetation getting away from the locals’ houses, the trail was getting more and more unnoticeable. Most part were having loose soil, aside from covered with moss, some parts were covered by grasses or fallen leaves and that made our trek a bit challenging.

Mount Takliadimg_7835Mt Takliad

After trekking for more than an hour, the team was excited as we get passed the steep ascent and we were about to follow the trail on the ridge going up to the summit. But the unexpected happened – we got lost or the trail was just erased or the guides forgot the trail? The guides led us to a dead end. So it’s either we climb up the boulders or pass through the thick forest or jump off the cliff? The guides tried to scout for a passable trail ahead but to no avail, it is not worth the risk. The guides made the call to get back and find the alternative trail on the other side of the mountain. We back trailed a bit and went to the other side of the mountain and go around going to the foot of Mount Takliad.

Mount Takliad TrailMount Takliad Trail

We passed by an easy trail down, passed by a small rice field and farm and then went straight to a not so established but visible trail going up to the peak. The trail going up has a resemblance to the trail of Mount Lanaya but shorter. The trail is just 3/9 but it’s enough to pump up our hearts and sweat our body out. The steepness of the trail has just made our knees trembled at some point. But that doesn’t stop us from our desires to reach the peak in no time to have our lunch.  Everyone was literally excited to get to the peak as our stomach were rumbling already.

The trail to the Peak

The Camp Site:

We reached the peak thirty minutes past 1PM in the afternoon and ate our lunch. Right after lunch, there was a heavy downpour. Geez, we need to get cover as we were not able to pitch our tents yet. After the rain had stopped, we pitched our tents and settled down for a bit.

Mount Takliad is basically a less trodden mound and has no established camp site too. The peak has a small clearing and literally has a very small area for camping. At the peak, there is a small flat ground that can accommodate 3-4 tents. Some area on the side of the mountain peak can accommodate at least 3 tents too. Basically the peak of Mount Takliad is also the camp site and can only accommodate as much as 6-7 tents.

Dinner / Socials:

It was an almost spontaneous adventure so we were not able to bring game cards or anything for socials. We reached the peak too early and had nothing to do so we decided to have some early socials. The gang played the “Ping Pang Pong” game and had some truth and dare as consequence for the losers.

We prepared our dinner early and had it by 6pm. Again we had nothing to do after but another social activity and this time, we we’re having serious talks about ourselves. Everyone has to introduce thy own self to all as we have new guests with us. We entertained ourselves by asking (silly) questions and bullying was not an exception. LOL. We got to know each other a little too well and at the same time we had so much fun despite the absence of alcoholic drinks.

Having fun with the socials activity

After socials, we had this crazy stuff going on wherein we stand near each other, just stared at the sky for nothing and we just laughed why we did that. We had a good time throwing jokes with each other until we called it a night at around 9PM.

The Morning after the wetly sleep

We managed to make our camp comfortable with the help of the earth pads and had our good night sleep. But the strong winds and the heavy rain downpour had awakened the whole camp. The rain water got inside our tent. The ground sheet must have gotten the water inside our tent floor that distracted our sleep. The rain stopped at nearly morning but I chose to sleep at wet tent floor as I don’t have enough sleep the days before the climb. Good thing our friends found a way to get some sleep too despite being soaked inside the tents and still manage to woke up laughing about the hilarious experience.

Mount Takliad Peak

We had our breakfast and broke camp right after.  The group decided not to proceed to Mount Lantoy because it was raining the previous night that we might not be able to cross the river due to flooding. We started our descent and Lo and behold! The trail got treacherous! It was slippery and muddy and I had my fair share of slips too. Upon arriving back at the jump off, we washed ourselves before going back to Town.

We can’t get enough of the adventure despite the not so perfect experience. Thus, half of us decided to proceed for another day of camping at Osmeña peak.

Reflections:

Despite the changes in itinerary and the antagonistic weather condition, the overall experience is one of a kind. The fun and the challenges that quenched our thirst for adventure made the experience a memorable one, from the trail challenges – the tumbles and slips -, the heavy rain downpour, etc. Despite the minor hiccups that we encountered in our adventures, it will seem not to matter when you spend and share it with good people around.

About the tourism, it is really nice to know that the local government was taking the initiative to control and monitor their adventure attractions. It is a bold move to help preserve the natural beauty and cleanliness of the place as well as promote safety for the tourists. However, I always hear about tourists not wanting to visit Argao for adventure or worse take it out from their bucket list for the reasons below:

  1. The guide fee is a bit expensive
  2. The territorial system of guide ship services (You need to hire another set of guides when you want to proceed for another adventure that is out of the guides jurisdiction / area.) It would be nice if it is possible that for a series of adventure, there is only one set of guide throughout from start till end of adventure.

How to get there?

  • From Cebu South Bus Terminal ride a bus bound to Argao or any bus that would pass Argao
  • Alight at the Town Proper (Poblacion)
  • Register at the Tourism Office and secure your guide if you have not called the office beforehand.
  • Hire a motorcycle taxi (habal-habal) to barangay hall at Conalum, Argao for on-site Registration
  • Head back to the jump off point

Few Tips:

  • Contact the Tourism Office beforehand so that they can provide guide(s) ahead and save from being held up in the Tourism office during registration while looking for one.
  • Wear proper trekking attire as the trail is not established when starting the climb from Conalum Jump off (near barangay Hall).
  • Parts of the trail have loose soil that can be very slippery and muddy especially on rainy season.
  • It is advisable to go in small group since the camp site is just too small to accommodate more tents. If you are with a large group, better ask the guides to camp at the foot as there is a vast area in there for camping.
  • There is not enough flat surface ground for camping, so bring with you few things that would make your camping experience a lot comfortable. To know such tips, refer to my previous post, https://wanderingsoulscamper.com/2016/11/05/trail-tweaks-how-to-make-your-camping-experience-more-comfortable/
  • Preserve the cleanliness of the place by observing the leave no trace principle. Whatever you bring in, pack it out. Do not throw garbage anywhere or leave anything behind rather pack it out and dispose it properly.
