10000 roses cafe
10,000 Roses Cafe : The next romantic haven?

Don’t have an idea where to bring your significant other for a romantic date? Well, the 10,000 Led roses cafe can be your best bet. The 10,000 roses cafe is located near Lantaw Floating restaurant in Cordova, Cebu.

Cebu is a chest of beautiful spots both natural and man-made. The Cebuanos were quite hyped when Sirao Flower Farm made rounds in social media. It was also a big thing when the butanding watching in Oslob made a considerable noise on the internet.

Lately, a new beautiful spot within the city made rounds again on the internet. Inspired by the 20,000 lighted rose garden display in Dongdaemun, South Korea, the 10,000 Roses Cafe is established by an avid fan. The cafe is here to brighten the city of Cebu with 10,000 illuminating white roses filling the front porch of the cafe.

The hype on social media about this new place is spreading like a virus. In just a matter of weeks after the place was opened to general public, it has gained its social momentum and had drawn a lot of visitors.

Last weekend, in response to the invite of my fellow blogger, foureyedlaagan, wanderingfeetph and the bisaya vlogger Glenn Abucay, we went to the place.

How to get there?

From SM City North, take the hired Van (v-hire) bound for Cordova. Travel time is around an hour. The fare is 35 pesos each person. Alight at Gaisano Grandmall Cordova. From there, hire a tricycle going to Lantaw Restaurant. The fare for the tricycle is 15 pesos per pax. Alternatively, you can hire the pedicab (padyak) but it would be faster if you will get the tricycle.

The 10,000 Roses Cafe Experience:

The trip was agreed two hours before the meetup time. It’s one of the most spontaneous trips we had together with these guys.

10000 roses cafe, 10,000 Roses Cafe

The gang agreed to meet up at SM City North at 3 PM, but due to traffic, we gathered together at around 4 pm. We then take our ride immediately to catch the sunset at the 10K Led flower café. The vlogarkada (as foureyed called it) arrived at around 5:20 PM.

We were a bit shocked when we saw the remarkable number of tourists in the area. If the café has 10,000 roses, the tourist around it was about the same number. 10, 000 people around! Would you believe that? Of course, I’m exaggerating things here. Yes, there are a lot of tourists who flocked the place (not really 10,000 though).

10,000 Roses Cafe

All you can see from afar are the countless heads of people around the area. The tourists can’t get enough of themselves taking a lot of pictures with the flowers. It’s almost the same as the crowd when Sirao Flower farm had its moment.

It’s a bit frustrating that the tourists are stubborn. We went around at the back of the coffee shop to check the place. Even at the back of the café has a lot of visitors chilling. Some say that the official opening of the café will be on Feb 14, but it opened last weekend, Saturday, Feb 11, 2017.

The café offers a variety of beverages and snacks. Unfortunately, we didn’t order any as they have a few more unavailable on their menu. Besides the café is full of guests at that time.

Being a responsible tourist:

When I walked around at the other side of the café, I quickly noticed the guard on duty. He was the only one at that time, busy watching the visitors and asking them not to enter the restricted area. I was a bit annoyed that few visitors were too stubborn and did not even pay respect to the guard.

It was the time that I decided to stop taking pictures as I have enough already and have a quick chit-chat with the guard on duty. I found out that the café is supposedly not to open soon, but due to the social media hype, the owner decided to open the café for business ahead of schedule.

The guard on duty was a bit pissed off, as there are a lot of visitors that would always try to get into the middle of these artificial flowers for picture purposes. They even don’t mind what will happen to those flowers, whether it can damage the flowers or whatsoever.

10,000 Roses Cafe

I even asked if the owner has plans to impose an entrance fee to at least minimize the crowd coming in and out. Or even put more barricades in order for the guard not to exert extra effort keeping the watch to those not so mindful tourists.

The guard said that the owner has no plans on imposing any entrance fees. He said that the owner just wanted the place to be a romantic getaway, a place where friends, family or love ones can chill and have peace of mind.

10,000 Roses Cafe

It is really commendable what the owner of this Korean themed 10,000 roses cafe has in mind. They just wanted to bring the look and feel of Korea within the city without spending a buck going outside the country. However, the destructive minds of the people can sometimes be uncontrollable.

10,000 Roses Cafe

I guess, the saying that goes, “If you are living a good life, live it and don’t tell anyone. People tend to destroy beautiful things.”

The Future:

We had this weird thought of coming to this place as early as possible due to the fact that anytime soon the place might get destroyed. And it doesn’t take long actually. The next day, I was both saddened and pissed off by the news, and maybe not only me, that some flowers were destroyed.

10,000 Roses Cafe

It was making rounds in social media and on the news that the place was temporarily closed until the flowers were fixed.

And still, the owners are very kind not to get pissed off by what happened. Instead, they just handle things gracefully. And decided to fix it.

Hopefully, our fellow tourists will be responsible enough. It’s not really bad to enjoy every moment whenever we travel but let us take into consideration our impact on the place we visited in.

Let’s travel with fun but let us minimize the negative social, economic and environmental impacts of our presence whenever we are. Let us generate greater economic benefits for local people and enhance the well-being of host communities.

For sure, this 10,000 roses Cafe can be the next romantic haven when we are not going to destroy it. Let us travel responsibly.

How about you? Are you planning to visit the 10,000 roses cafe? As a traveler, how would you promote or be an advocate of responsible tourism? Let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment below.

Tips, Do’s and Don’ts:

  1. Go there early to stay away from heavy traffic.
  2. Stay at the café till evening to appreciate the beauty of the roses when lit.
  3. Be a responsible tourist. Obey the rules and don’t dare break them.
  4. Respect begets respect. Thus, respect the staff and authorities for crowd control.
  5. Do not enter restricted areas and trample the flowers. The flowers have electrical wiring and can cause an electrical shock when not careful.
  6. When getting back to Cebu City, do it after the rush hours to stay away from heavy traffic.

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden: Busay’s Romantic Hideaway

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden

Busay has been known for tourist spots like Mountain View Nature’s Park, Temple of Leah, Chateu de Busay, Tops Skyline Garden, Rancho Cancio, Serenity Farm, etc. Being one of the frequented place in the highlands of Cebu, Busay has a lot to offer aside from the mentioned already. City view is really stunning at night at Tops Skyline Garden and a special dinner date with family, friends or loved ones can be possible at Lantaw Restaurant near Mountain View Nature’s Park.

With that said, who would have thought that all these days, there is a botanical garden that lies hidden on the sloping hills of Busay? It is the Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden that is located in Barangay Malubog, Busay, Cebu. Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden boasted its beautiful terraces of flowers of different species consisting of around more than a hundred of Cebu’s own local flower varieties.

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden

This Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden is the first terraced botanical Garden in the Philippines, per se. The garden has just opened recently last October 1, 2016 and it caught our attention prompting the 3 wanderers to pay a quick visit of the place over the weekend.

IMG_6141.JPG

Last weekend, the three wanderers foureyedlaagan, WanderingFeetPH and yours truly WanderingSoulScamper agreed to visit Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden. We went there by motorbikes at around 4PM in the afternoon.

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden

The three wanderers had no enough sleep from the previous night out. But that doesn’t stop us to pursue our plans. As we went up to the Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden and headed to the coffee shop to pay for the entrance fee, we felt a bit groggy and sleepy still so we ordered coffee. We had our gadgets out, as we took pictures on our way up. We had some short of chit chats with the attendants in the coffee shop. Upon finishing my orders, unknowingly Miss Joy had been listening to us attentively as we made jokes to the cashier and the barista and she eventually started a conversation.

She was asking me from where we learned about Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden. I just smiled and say, we learned it from our fellow blogger who just recently visited the place and then I told her that we might be blogging about the place too. She is very friendly and thankful and asked where she could check our blogs. We had a short talk and then I joined the two wanderers who had been taking pictures of the place already.

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden

Few minutes after and the rain had poured, we immediately took shelter in the coffee shop. It was timely that the barista just paged us that our orders were ready. Yes, they had speakers put up all over the place and played relaxing music. Just few moments after our boisterous laughter and few crazy video episodes, Miss Joy joined us where we had a chance to asked few facts about the place.

Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden

IMG_8473

History of Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden:

According to Miss Joy, the Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden is designed to showcase local flowers. The flowers are meticulously arranged on a mountain slope to form terraces. She said that it took about 7 years of hard work. The whole idea was conceptualized by a father who happens to be a co-owner of El Salvador Resort in Danao, City.

The owner wanted his 2-hectare parcel of land in Malubog, Cebu City to be developed into a flower garden where he and his three children could bond. Wow! A sweet father indeed! For the owner, the creation of the garden is one way of expressing his love to his children. The Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden was not completely developed yet as of this writing. I am honored that Miss Joy told us few more insights about the future plans of the garden. In addition, she even told us to wait a little longer to wait for the owner and maybe meet the owner in person but we need to go back to the city as it was getting late already.

The Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden Experience:

How does it feel when you are walking in the garden full of these local flowers? While these flowers may be overlooked and ignored as they are really common locally but they made it more eye pleasing. Though the variety of flowers were not new to me, but the concept and the way the flowers were arrange in terraces, were just stunning. The view was really picture perfect or shall I say kind of instagrammable? 🙂

Furthermore, they have few huts around that can be rented for 100 pesos per hour. There were speakers on those huts that were connected to the coffee shop playing those cheesy songs 🙂

Twin Crater Lake Balinsasayao & Danao: An intimate hideaway

“I felt like lying down by the side of the trail and remembering it all. The woods do that to you, they always look familiar, long lost, like the face of a long-dead relative, like an old dream, like a piece of forgotten song drifting across the water, most of all like golden eternities of past childhood or past manhood and all the living and the dying and the heartbreak that went on a million years ago and the clouds as they pass overhead seem to testify (by their own lonesome familiarity) to this feeling.”

—Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums

Why do people love nature? Why do we love to commune with mother earth?

People would tend to answer that question with “I like nature because it’s beautiful and it provides tranquility” something like that. Yes, that’s a pretty good answer. But when you turn that question over and over, you might not think that it’s an easy question to answer. I have thought of that question several times and it made me question myself, why am I hooked with nature? What are the reasons? I reflected on each of my answers and found out that I barely have answers that I can consider satisfactory –  which made me contemplate again for deeper reasons.

Lake Balinsasayao

As far as I can remember, I always love nature. I spent most of my time outdoors since I was a child. For outdoor lovers like me, the euphoria of spending time outside is inexplicable. If you spent more time with nature, you’ve probably noticed that you feel happier out there than staying within the four corners of your room. There are so many reasons why we love nature.

First of all, is because we are part of it and we evolved in it, it’s already in our DNA that we need nature for our psychological being. It reminds us of death so that we can appreciate life.

Lake Danao

Secondly, nature has the ability to bring people closer to their sense of spirituality, openness and reality. It reminds us that we can’t stop it from raining, delay the setting of the sun or set the temperature to some comfortable degrees. It awakens us from a dream and realize how little control we really have in this world and that hardships and lack of control are part of life and accepting these reality makes it not only bearable but leads to the possibility of celebrating the bliss of being alive.

Lake Danao

Lastly, nature teaches us that there is nothing wrong with ourselves. When we are communing with nature, we don’t look at the mirrors, we are focused on the setting around us. When we’re alone in nature, or with a loving friend or group of good company, we can be totally free and be our real selves. We get the sweet relief from all forms of oppression and stigma from the so called society like sexism, racism and even trans-phobia and or homophobia and other things that would belittle one another.

In general, people love nature because of the euphoric effect that they could get from spending time with it, the surprises of the natural world and how nature enthralls with amazement.

Lake Balinsasayao

The Twin Crater Lake Balinsasayao & Danao Natural Park of Negros Oriental, can be one of the best intimate hideaway for people that seek utmost outdoor delight. This natural wonder can be found few kilometers away from Dumaguete City. It is cloaked with a montane rain forest of about 830 meters above sea level. This park is one of the unperturbed tourist attraction in the highlands of Sibulan. Surprisingly, being one of the highly suggested tourist attraction in the fast progressing Dumaguete City, the lakes are still in its pristine form. The turquoise waters are still in its natural state; the surrounding rain-forest are elegantly standing guarding the lakes. The fresh air that smells like a morning dew and the cool breeze will keep you cool throughout the day.

Lake Balinsasayao

It is amazing that the park has just minimal human influence. You can only see few small native cottages and paddle boats docked on the sides. These lakes are situated in a hollow between four mountains that belong to Talinis Range, Mount Mahungot,Mount Kalbasan , Mount Balinsasayao and Mount Guidabon. Lake Balinsasayao lies to the northwest of the ridge and Lake Danao to the southeast.

Getting to Lake Balinsasayao & Danao

By Public Transport

From Dumaguete you can ride a PUJ (Public Utility Jeep) going to Amlan and get off at the juncture in La-laan in San Jose. From there hire a motorcycle taxi (habal-habal) going to the Twin Lake natural park. Be cautious on the overpricing of fares. Prepare your best haggling skills but don’t be rude. Estimated fare is 400 pesos for 2 pax (roundtrip).

By Car

From Dumaguete or from your starting point, drive to the juncture in La-laan in San Jose and follow through the road up to the highlands of Sibulan.

The jaunt to the Twin Lake Balinsasayao & Danao

From San Jose juncture, there is a concrete road that will lead you to the lakes. The road is concrete paved but some parts are steep and have blind curves so be careful. There is only one road leading to the lakes that would take up to one hour drive. You will pass by a few villages and Azalea Restaurant before you reach the registration office where you will have to pay entrance and parking fees. From there the lakes are just a few minutes away.

The Twin Lakes

IMG_6762.JPG

The crater Lake Balinsasayao is the first of the two lakes you will see upon reaching the end of the road from the entrance of the park. There are two entry points going down to lake Balinsasayao, one is by following the concrete paved road or by taking the slightly longer trail going down.  You can see the first lake also from the restaurant balcony near the entrance.

IMG_6833.JPG

Lake Balinsasayao has a surface area of about 76 hectares and is about twice as large as the Danao lake. The lake side is generally steep and form part of the crater walls that plunge to depths of up to approximately 90 meters. The lake is inhabited by at least three species of introduced freshwater fish. There are also wild animals in the area and the surrounding vegetation is said to be dominated by around 180 forest trees species including the endemic Red Lauan and Almaciga.

IMG_6514.JPGYou can reach Lake Danao, the second lake by trekking on a rugged terrain trail or by renting a boat. The boat will take you to the other side of the road just below the access trail going to the view deck located in the ridge between two lakes. The boat is on per hour charging so might as well take the trail if you plan to stay longer at Lake Danao hideaway. The 600-meter paddle boat ride will just take few minutes.

However, if you want to have a little adventure and have enough time, choose the trail to reach Lake Danao. The trail is around one kilometers from lake Balinsasayao to Lake Danao and might take up to an hour trek under the stoned path, rugged terrain trail in the midst of the rainforest.

IMG_6621.JPG

IMG_6653.JPG

During our visit, there were just few tourists maybe because it was raining hard the previous night. The place was so quiet yet relaxing rather than creepy despite the thick vegetation. The trail going to Lake Danao is a stairway made of limestone rocks and slightly covered with moss and can be very slippery on rainy days.

Lake Danao, though smaller than the Lake Balinsasayao, is equally exquisite! The basin of torquiose waters surrounded by the thick lush green vegetation is just breathtaking. There are no cottages in the second lake, it will just be you and  the lake. After having a doze of nature you can go up and have a quick rest at the view deck while indulging yourself for an overlooking view of the two lakes before home.

img_6853IMG_6854.JPGOn the main entrance, there is a local restaurant with the balcony as a viewing deck for lake Balinsasayao which we chose to check on our way out of the park. Along its parking spaces are small souvenir shops too. And oh! we spotted an eagle on the tree branch where our car was parked.

Indeed, these lakes can be a safe haven for outdoor lovers and to those who just wanted to have a short break from the chaotic city life. The place is so inviting and conducive for picnics, group adventure and the likes. I personally recommend to visit this place when you’re visiting Dumaguete city, the city of gentle people. Despite its distance from the city,  this Islands’ intimate hideaway is worth a try!
